One of the biggest nightmares when taking Taiwan High Speed Rail (HSR) with a large luggage is arriving to find that the designated luggage storage area is already filled with smaller luggages. In this situation, placing a large luggage in front of your seat takes away valuable legroom, while the overhead luggage rack may not be suitable for larger bags. 

So, where should you put a 28-inch luggage or a 20-inch carry-on? This guide breaks down the luggage rules and storage options for frequent HSR travelers, helping make your journey a little less stressful and inconvenient. 

Luggage Quantity & Size Restrictions  

Taiwan High Speed Rail has the following luggage restrictions: 

• Number of pieces: Each passenger may bring up to two pieces of luggage.  

• Length: No single piece of luggage may exceed 150 cm in length.  

• Size: The total of the length + width + height of a single piece may not exceed 220 cm. (Most 25-inch and 28-inch luggages fall within this limit.)  

• Weight: Each piece of luggage must weigh less than 40 kg.  

What If the HSR Luggage Storage Area Is Full? 

Small luggage: 20-inch luggages and personal backpacks can be placed on the overhead luggage rack or in front of your seat, leaving the designated luggage areas at the front and back of the carriage available for larger luggages. We tested the Acer 20-inch Copenhagen and 19-inch Barcelona front-opening luggage and found that placing them in front of the seat did not significantly reduce legroom. 

The Acer 20-inch Copenhagen front-opening luggage can be placed in front of your seat without taking up significant legroom. 

Its front compartment allows easy access to your laptop, medication, and other essentials, lowering chances of leaving things behind on the train. 

Large luggage: For large luggages of 28 inches or above, it is recommended to prioritize the designated large luggage storage areas near the carriage entrances to avoid blocking the aisle. 

If you are traveling with a stroller that needs to be stored in the luggage area after being folded, you can notify the ticketing staff when purchasing your ticket so they can assist with seat arrangements.

HSR Luggage Storage Services 

If you don't want to drag your luggage around after arriving at your destination, Taiwan High Speed Rail stations offer convenient paid luggage lockers for travelers. 

The lockers come in different sizes, including large and small compartments. Before arriving at the station, you can check the official Taiwan High Speed Rail website for locker locations and available spaces. 

Reminder: Please avoid using adjacent seats to store your luggage, as this may affect other passengers' rights and comfort. 

Latest HSR Power Bank Regulations & Safety Tips 

Due to the increasing number of power bank fires and overheating incidents, Taiwan High Speed Rail requires passengers to use power banks that have passed BSMI or NCC certification. 

Power banks must be kept with you during the journey. Do not charge a power bank while it is inside a purse, bag, or luggage. If a power bank is deformed or becomes abnormally hot, do not bring it onboard or use it. 

Fire extinguishers are available in the vestibule at both ends of each carriage, as well as in the large luggage storage areas of Cars 1 and 12. If a power bank catches fire, follow the instructions on the fire extinguisher and immediately notify the train crew using the passenger emergency intercom.
